Sat 21st April Styal 'A' 5 Irlam 5
Apr 22, 2012, 11:38 am

The 1st team game was called off just prior to kick off.

Styal 'A' put in a commendable performance to draw with Irlam in an entertaining game. TThe match saw Irlam score first. Styal had a 2-1 lead at half time; Irlam were 3-2 up within 10 minutes of the second half. From here on in Styal managed to equalise each time Irlam took the lead ending with a late equaliser from Joe Knight after a terrific run past 3 or 4 Irlam defenders. The draw (5-5) was a fair result on both sides.

Sat 31st March Styal 2 Greenhalls 1; Styal 'A' 1 Baroni 3
Mar 31, 2012, 6:38 pm

Styal 'A' opened the scoring when Lee Taylor took advantage of a Baroni slip at the back and fired low past the keeper midway through the first half. The game was an even, competitive affair with both sides creating odd chances. However, it was Styal who came in 2-1 down at half time after as they again failed to deal with 2 set pieces which Baroni finished off by finding the net.  The second half was another competitive affair and although chance were limited, Styal still had enough to have turned the scoreline around. The 3-1 maybe flattered Baroni slightly as they scored again in the last minute as Styal threw the kitchen sink at it in their efforts to equalise.

Sat 17th March Styal 1 Rylands 1; Styal 'A' 1 Unicorn 4
Mar 18, 2012, 10:07 pm

Styal 'A' never really got going against a more competitive Unicorn side. Unicorn scored mid way through the first half and Styal responded almost immediately with yet another Gareth Metcalfe goal. The second half saw the back 4 responding well as Unicorn piled on early pressure. Styal only managed to hold the ball upfront briefly at times and all Styal's midfield had a bad day at the office gifting the ball to the opposition as they seemed unable to string more than 2 passes together. Styal had their chances in the second half but Unicorn's keeper pulled off 2 top notch saves from Metcalfe and Adkin. However Styal's defensive resolve also waned and Unicorn punished Styal for not competing in the air at set pieces with 2 headed goals. A further late Unicorn goal probaly flattered the opposition.

Sat 3rd March Styal 2 Garswood 0; Middlewich town Res 5 Styal Res 0; Styal 'A' 5 APFC 2
Mar 3, 2012, 8:01 pm

For Styal 'A'; Steve Manifold was a key factor setting up the first goal with his delivery into the box and his delivery was also key for a number of the other goals. Matt Cook scored the opener. The rest of the goals were spread around with Ollie Wooton heading home and Gareth Metcalfe firing a blistering right foot shot beyond the keeper after cutting in from the left.

Sat 25th Feb Styal 1 Middlewich Town 1; Irlam 6 Styal 'A' 0
Feb 26, 2012, 8:56 pm

Thanks to Dave Oates efforts on the pitch Styal's first team managed to get the game against Middlewich on. The game finished with honours even.

Styal 'A' were depleted with a bare 11 available and unfortunately came up against a confident Irlam side who passed better than any other team Styal had met this season. Styal held out for the first 30 minutes but when the first goal went in for Irlam off the underside of the bar, another couple of strikes before half time gave Styal a mountain to climb in the second half. Irlam took advantage of the 3-0 lead and continued to play good football using the width of the pitch and puling Styal's formation around. An early goal from Irlam's centre forward just after the break effectively sealed the game. With the luxury of substitutes, Irlam were able to put fresh legs on and Styal's midfield ran on empty for the last 20 minutes as they tried to plug the gaps. Steve Manifold and Tom Grindell battled hard in the middle of the park and Tom Perry inbetween the sticks had another good game.
