DETAILS WILL FOLLOW

Sat 15th March; Cringlewood Ath 3 Styal 'A' 0
Mar 17, 2008, 8:43 am
Styal's home game against Garswood was called off due to a waterlogged pitch whilst the Reserves had no fixture scheduled. So that left Styal 'A' with a 6 pointer against Cringlewood. Unfortunately they ended up the wrong side of the scoreline.

CRINGLEWOOD   3     V    0 STYAL  A

This game was the start of Styal's 8 game run in to promotion and against one of the sides that will surely finish in the top 3. It was never going to be easy and so it proved, although it was a slightly lacklustre performance from Styal especially the first 45 mins and after 25 mins they found themselves 2-0 down to, two  very clinical finishes that JM had no chance with. A minute later in could have been 3 as a shot thundered against Styal's crossbar and all the warning signs were there. Styal were not close enough as a team and were second to every first and second ball. They looked a bit disorganised and gaps were there for all to see. Attacking wise they seemed void of ideas. And the first half finshed 2-0 without Styal  not having a single shot on the opponents goal.

Styal did improve slightly second half as they started to get a little tighter and in fact JM didnt have that much to do but with 15 mins to go a fluke cross found its way into the top corner assisted by the wind it has to be said and that was that. DG had a close range effort saved on the line by the keeper and Matty West had a header that hit the top of the bar in the final five minutes. 7 games to go and 21 pts up for grabs, realistically Styal cant afford to drop any more and a huge effort is needed in every game if promotion is to be a possibilty, But as someone once said 'Footballs a funny old game'

Sat 8th March Pilkingtons 4 Styal 1, Styal Res 0 Garswood Res 3, Fernley 4 Styal 'A' 5

Pilkingtons 4 Styal 1

This was a game between the top 2 in the league and it was Styal who took the game to Pilkingtons with Dave Graham hitting a 25 yard strike into the top corner after 3mins to stun the home team. Then after 15 minutes Graham beat the keeper to the ball and rounded him only to fire into the side netting with the goal open.

On 25mins with Styal camped in the Pilkingtons half Brian Matthews hit a shot and with Pilkington's keeper on the floor the ball was chested out off the goal line and away to safety. With the Pilkington's net living a charmed life and with Styal only  1goal up it came as shock when the Styal defence failed to clear a free kick, which resulted in the home team levelling the score 3 minutes before the break. The second half  saw the home team taking the game to Styal and with a strong wind behind them the home teams midfield captain unleashed a 35 yard rocket into the top corner giving the Styal keeper no chance. This forced Styal into a rethink but before Styal could get their sub on the home team fired in a 3rd on 60mins from a corner. Styal now went for broke, playing with 3 defenders but they were unable to claw anything back apart from a goal that was ruled out for off side.

Pilkington's went up the field and scored a 4th goal with a 25 yard effort to effectively kill the game with only 8 minutes remaining. Full time Pilkington 4-Styal 1.The better team won with Pilk's taking all their chances and Styal not taking theirs

Styal Res 0 Garswood Res 3
Team :- R Harrison, N Capel, L Tueart, J Heywood, D Swindells, M Barnes, R Buckley, N Griffin, S Roberts, S Laffley, D Gregory Subs, P Moore, G Vernon, C McCormick

Styal looked to bounce back after their defeat to Pilkingtons the previous week but got of to a disastrous start when a slip a up inside their own half allowed the Garswood forward to steal the ball and break through and slot the ball home with only three minutes gone.
Styal found themselves up against a lively Garswood side but had the better of the play in the first half, the best chance falling to Ryan Buckley who surged through from the midfield with only the keeper to beat, but the Garswood keeper stood tall to block the shot.
The second half saw Styal start lively with the introduction of Chris McCormick and within five minutes of the start saw Danny Gregory break free down the Styal right but again saw the Garswood keeper pull of another save to thwart him. As Styal pushed forward this left gaps in the defence which gave Garswood the opportunity to brake free forcing Harrison in the Styal goal to block a one on one. Still Styal pushed but failed to find the net on several occasions but in their desperation to grab the equaliser allowed to much room in the defence and Garswood scored twice in the last ten minutes to put the nail in the Styal coffin.
With no game this Saturday Styal will take a break and look forward to some tough fixtures over the coming weeks.

FERNLEY  4   V   5    STYAL A.

TEAM NEWS.

Last weeks christmas tree formation lost its pines as Player manager Takiar decided to play a 3-5-2 system.Lee Mc came in from the wilderness to deputise for the injured JM in net.Marchy, fresh from his weeks rest, slotted in the back 3 along withAlex and Pat.Houghy started his first game since injury along with marcus and cooky in the centre of midfield. Bodders was on the left, Loz on the right and vinny and westy up front. Browny, Smithy and Ab were on the bench.

MATCH REPORT.

This league encounter really was the proverbial 'Game of two Halves' played in very difficult conditions.Styal went 1 up inside 4 mins when the Fernley defender handled on the line. Bodders stepped up to slot home the penalty low to his left. The second came 3 mins later when a cross from the right fell to Cooky who KNEED it home from six yards.10 mins later it was 3-0 when Matty West was pushed in the box for the 2nd penalty of the game. Matty himself got up, and finished it. Cooky got his second on 35 mins with a low 20 yard drive and Styal were 4-0 up.But it has to be said that this scoreline slightly flattered styal because they weren't playing that well.Fernley got what should have been a consolation goal just before the break, with what has to be said, a great turn and strike from outside the box.

HALF TIME 1-4.

The second half belonged completly to Fernley although Alex kemp put Styal 5-1 up when he turned nothing into a goal.the ball came to him in the box and with his back to goal, he spun and fired his shot, beating the keeper at the near post. This should have made Styal comfortable, but they decided to press the self destruct button and Fernley completely dominated the rest of the game, scoring 3 without reply and if it wasnt for Lee Mcs unorthodox but effective saves, the scoreline could have been disasterious for styals promotion hopes. But as it was its 3pts on board against a team that Styal probably took lightly.

Player-manager Punk Takiar said “you really couldn't have predicted the 2 nd half today. The pitch & conditions didn't help, but we need to be able to kill games like this off. We conceded at the wrong time & heads went down. There was also a lack of discipline today, with a few players wandering out of position because we were 4-0 up. We must learn lessons from this. Anyway, an off-game, but we held out under extreme pressure towards the end & at the end of the day it was still 3 points in the bag. We need to be back to our best for the 6-pointer against Cringlewood next week. We missed Joe Morrell's presence today, even though Lee played a blinder. Some selection headaches now.”

MOM : LEE McDONNELL â€" HAD NOTHING TO DO FIRST HALF, YET UNDER SIEGE IN THE LAST 30 MINS. 3 GREAT SAVES KEPT US IN IT. MORE IMPORTANTLY…..HE ACTUALLY TURNED UP!!!”

Sat 1st March Styal Res go down at Pilkingtons. Styal 'A' win on penalty shoot out
Mar 3, 2008, 8:55 am
Styal's game at home to Woodley was postponed due to a bereavement within the Woodley camp and Styal F.C. sends sympathy and best wishes.

Pilkington Res 1 Styal Res 0
Team :- R Harrison, N Capel, S Boardman, P Moore, M Filson, M Barnes, R Buckley, W Dickenson, S Laffley, C McCormick, G Smith.
Subs :- L Tueart, D Swindles, S Roberts, D Gregory

Styal looked to continue their good league form after a fine performance the previous week but the omens seemed to stack against them. Leaving in good time from the club house the convoy was less than ten minutes away from Pilkington's ground ,when they hit roadwork's, and arrived with only fifteen minutes before kickoff, this wasn't the preparation they had planned.
Styal fielded a very strong team however and confidence was high, but in windy conditions Styal lost the toss and had to play into the wind. This suited Pilkingtons long ball tactic and Styal soon found themselves in trouble failing to clear the ball from the penalty box when the Pilkington striker notched onto the poor clearance to smash home after eight minutes.
Things went from bad to worse when Staz Boardman had to leave the field with a suspected broken bone in his hand after twenty minutes. However Styal did try and push the game to Pilkington's and with Buckley in good goal scoring form, he started to cause the pilks defence some problems with a couple of good surging runs from midfield.
Styal saw the first half out 1-0 down and looked forward to making advantage of the wind in the second half, but failed to do so, with some poor decisions in passing and the forward line failed to break the strong Pilk's defence. There were a few half chances that fell to Styal that saw the Pilks goalkeeper parry a couple of shots off the line but with no players following in they came to nothing.
Styal made a few changes to the shape and threw caution to the wind but still failed to break a stubborn Pilk's defence, the best chance came when Gregory latched onto a through ball but could only put his shot wide.
Not a good day at the office, the only ray of light was the shock result of Poynton going down 4-1 at home to Bottom of the league Broadheath !!
Next week will see changes to the Styal starting line up after a lack of desire from the starting eleven. !!!!

STYAL  A   0    V    0  NORTHENDEN VICS.(aet) (Styal win 5-4on pens)

TEAM NEWS

Player-manager Punk Takiar used this cup tie to rotate the squad & rest a couple of players , asking Marchy and Scotty H to step down for the week. He brought in Houghy, Westy and Loz to the squad & Alex Kemp made his return to centre back after his trip to the states . The “gaffer” introduced his infamous 4-3-2-1 “christmas tree formation ” for the game â€" to gasps of astonishment & just about managed to avert a mini-revolt from his players. There was a back four of Poch , Alex, Pat & Ed, behind a midfield trio of Marcus, Cooky and Browny, with Bod & Vinny floating in a free role behind Andy Cha ndler.

MATCH REPORT

This 2nd round league cup tie was played in cold windy conditions and as a spectacle wasn't much to write home about with the wind making it difficult to play at times for both sides. The only real chance of the first half fell to Poch on 30 mins who found himself in space 7 yards out but sliced his volley just over the bar.The only other real effort of the half came from Vinny, but his low shot from the edge of the box was easily saved by the keeper.

The 2nd half wasnt much different apart from Northenden were reduced to 10 men after the centre forward kicked the ball away and recieved his second yellow of the game. but Styal very rarely looked in trouble. Alex Kemp made a few excellant tackles when neccesary, Pat lyons was assured next to him and Ed c was equally as good at the back.Marcus was a battling force in the middle and Andy C work rate along with Vinnys was outstanding. But neither side really looked like scoring today. That was until the dying minutes when, from a corner, the Northenden keeper somehow fluffed the cross and punched it against his own near post. But he got lucky. Then seconds later, Cooky nearly snatched it with what I think would have been a deserved victory, but, his fine 25 yard strike dipped just too late and crashed against the crossbar.

Extra time came and went and so it went to penalties. These situations create heroes and villains and Styals hero definately was JM. Houghy stepped up first, missed ,grabbed his kit, apologised and ran off into the distance saying something about how he was late for work.JM then equalled things up by producing a fine save to his left. Then it went to 4-4. Andy C scored the 6th one, then Jm produced yet more heroics with another fine stop, this time to his right.Styal have now gone 390 mins without conceding a goal and find themselves in the quater finals of the league cup.It would be interseting to find out what the league record is.Styal really are begining to look like a side that are organised now. the confidence has returned throughout the squad and the dressing room atmosphere is good. If they can keep this squad together for the rest of the season, including the players who didnt get in today, because  they need everyone together, and there has to be players for games and games for players, and an understanding about that, then the future is surely rosy.

OUT OF 10.

1...JM....(9).....TWO QUALITY PEN SAVES AND 390 MINS WITHOUT CONCEDING. INSPIRITATIONAL! NEEDS TO WORK ON THE “BALL-JUGGLING” THOUGH.

2...POCH.. 7...NICE, TIDY NO-NONSENSE PERFORMANCE , BUT NEEDS TO LOSE THE “CHINS”!

3...ED C.....8.....LOOKS A QUALITY FULL BACK & VERY COMPOSED ON THE BALL.

4...ALEX K..8.....ANOTHER CLASSY DISPLAY. LOOKED LIKE HE'D NEVER BEEN AWAY.

5...PAT LYONS.. 8. MR CONSTISTENCY.NEVER PUTS A FOOT WRONG . STRONG  & AGGRESSIVE TACLKING.

6...MARCUS..... 9.... RAN THE GAME & NEVER GAVE AN INCH IN THE MIDDLE. A REAL CAPTAIN'S PERFORMANCE.

7...BROWNY... 7.... GREAT MAN-MARKING JOB, COULD BE A NEW ROLE

8..COOKIE.... 8....ADAPTED WELL IN A DIFFERENT ROLE.NEARLY WON IT.

9..VINNY...... 7....EXCEPTIONAL WORK RATE. DID WHAT WAS ASKED.

10..ANDY C...8.....HELD THE BALL UP WELL,NEVER STOPPED RUNNING.

11...BODDERS.. 7...LOOKED GOOD WHEN ATTACKING HIS FULL BACK.

12..HOUGHY..... 8...GOT THE BALL DOWN WELL AND WANTED TO PLAY FOOTBALL. FITNESS IMPROVING

13..MATTY W.... 7.....A COUPL E OF DECENT TOUCHES WHEN HE CAME ON.

14...LOZ........... 7.....FOUND HIMSELF VICTIM OF THE OFFSIDE RULE UNFORTUNATELY , BUT LOOKED SHARP

MAN OF THE MATCH : MARCUS KENNEY â€" JUST PIPPED JOE MORRELL FOR MOM. HE IS NOW GETTING CLOSE TO FULL FITNESS, AND STAMPING HIS AUTHORITY ON EACH GAME. RAN THE MIDFIELD & HAD THE WHOLE TEAM ORGANISED. A REAL SKIPPER'S PERFORMANCE.

Takiar said “ I wanted to try something different today, and as league-leaders - a cup game is ideal for this. I also wanted to see some players in new positions & try some new attacking options. I also wanted to prove to my entire squad that every player is worth is starting place. The game itself was a real nail-biter, and the opposition were strong & up for it today, so the result was even more pleasing. In particular - Joe Morrell was outstanding again, and has not conceded a goal since he returned. Also Houghy will soon be ready for a full game & Browny showed he can be deployed as a very effective “man-marker. Our fitness also showed (apart form “cramp-king” Matt Cook), but I still need more of the boys at training! The boys appear to be up for it â€" both in the league & the cup and the atmosphere is buzzing again. We now need to keep it going.”

Saturday 23rd Feb; Linotype CHN 0 Styal 2; Styal Res 5 Greenhalls Padgate SO Res 2
Feb 24, 2008, 7:28 pm
Styal's first and Reserve teams record important victories and both continue to top their tables. The 'A' team were fixtureless but still head their division as we go into March.

Linotype/CHN 0 Styal 2
This was a tough game for Styal who dominated throughout. A determined Linotype team fought hard and made it difficult for Styal whose patience was only rewarded late on with 2 goals in the last 7 minutes.
Linotype keeper Merrick made an increasing number of good saves as the pressure mounted but his handball outside the box led to Styal's opener; the free kick was put into the opposition net by Warren Dickenson. With 3 minutes to go after good work by Gavin Smith, Ollie Barnes rounded the keeper to seal it for Styal. Linotype had 2 players sent off after each receiving 2 yellow cards. although the second sending off was in the dying minutes the first once happened at the end of the first half.
Styal's management duo of Lloyd Morrison and Steve Hardy were pleased that their side had remained patient against the dogged defending that faced them.
Best wishes to Lloyd and Bernice Morrison on the birth of their daughter from all at Styal

Team :- R Harrison, N capel (c), J Heywood, P Moore, D Swindells, S Roberts, R Buckley, N Griffin, M Barnes, C McCormick, D Gregory. Subs :- M Pochin, L Tueart, S Laffley

With a strong squad to select from Styal only made one change from the last game and looked to get off to a good start and that they did. On a bumpy but dry pitch it wasn't  a day for pretty football but Styal soon adapted well and had the Greenhalls defence on their heels. It was pressure from the word go from Styal and it took only eight minutes to unlock the Greenhalls defence when Si Roberts broke free down the right closing down on the Greenhalls keeper when he curled the ball home from just in side the box for a quality opening goal. This inspired Styal who went from strength to strength and kept pressing the ball high up the field and again the pressure paid off when the ball fell to Buckley who struck a sublime 25yard strike which almost took the nets off the goals ! This had the crowd buzzing ! Who is this player ? they were asking. There was more to come! Styal dominated the first half with Greenhalls lucky to get out their own half.
The second half saw Styal dictate the play and picked their way through the Greenhalls defence again when goal machine Buckley finished with a lovely side foot to get Styals' third and his third in two games, Barnes rushed over to congratulate him on his goal scoring prowess ! With the Styal on total control Greenhalls got a controversial free kick on the edge of the Styal box which was the closest they'd come all game to the Styal penalty area. The free kick that followed was a stunner, Harrison in goal could only stand and watch as the ball scorched past the wall and took the pegs out the net ! It was only a glimmer of hope for Greenhalls but it wasn't long before Styal increased the lead again when McCormick struck from five yards to make it 4-1 . Styal made three changes to freshen things up and saw the return of Mike Pochin after a long lay off, but it wasn't to long before he added his name to the score sheet with another quality finish.
Greenhalls grabbed a late second goal seven minutes into injury time after another controversial decision gave them a corner in which Styal failed to clear.
Styal Res take on second placed Pilkington Res next week in a vital top of the table clash.

Saturday 16th February Styal 4 Trafford Res 0; Daten Res 2 Styal Res 3; Styal 'A' 7 Old Alts 0
Feb 16, 2008, 9:50 pm
Styal achieved a fine hat trick of victories on Saturday and ALL 3 teams sit at the top of their respective leagues.

Styal 4 Trafford Res 0
Trafford and Styal fought out a tough 3-3 battle only 2 weeks ago. However, Styal's display on Saturday saw them totally eliminate Trafford as a threat and Styal goalkeeper Cowell's involvement was limited to taking occasional goal kicks.
An early goal by Graham set Styal on their way. The second mid way through the first half saw Thornton lob Trafford's keeper after some good Styal build up play involving Graham and Dickenson. This was the pick of the goals.
The central midfield was dominated by Styal through Massey and Dickenson and as a result Trafford's options were limited to balls over the midfield where unfortunately they found Vernon and Pownall snuffing out any forward threat. Styal's full backs were able to play the supporting roles to Matthews and Thornton playing in front of them as they terrorised the Trafford full backs. A goal before half time from the penalty spot by Chambers seemed to guarantee the points for Styal and if there was any doubt a goal early in the second half by Matthews after Traffords keeper had a 'Paul Robinson' moment sealed it.
Styal sat back on the lead but always carried a threat when they advanced with more chances falling to Chambers and Graham. The management team of Morrison and hardy were able to bring Boardman, Barnes and Filson into the game from the bench late on. As well as being delighted with the points the clean sheets and the +10 goal difference gained in the last 2 weeks could also be an important factor at the end of the season. Styal stay top.

Styal Reserves stay top after defeating Daten 3-2 at Daten. Team :- R Harrison, Matt (Jack the ripper) Barnes, J Heywood, P Moore, N capel, S Laffley, N Griffin, R Buckley, G Smith, D Gregory Subs:- C McCormick, D Swindells, D Oates

What a fine first half performance ! Styal looked to get back to winning ways after a poor performance the previous game. With Nial Griffin making his first appearance for Styal and Gavin Smith returning to the line up the team had a good balance and started the game with a good tempo and it wasn't long before Styal took the lead after a fine corner from Simon Roberts found Moore's head and with Laffely on hand to stab the ball home Styal to the lead. Daten hardly entered the Styal penalty box in the first twenty minutes and when they did they saw a swift move from Styal who turned defence to attack with a neat ball to Smith who drove forward to slip an inch perfect ball to Buckley who coolly slipped the ball under the keeper to make it 2-0. Its taken Buckley 1260 minutes of football to open his account, Barnes is still counting !
Daten to their credit didn't sit back and before half time a fine strike saw them cut the lead and get back into game, but again Styal pushed forward and on the stroke of half time a nice ball into the box saw Griffin put his head in where it hurts to nod home the third.
The second half saw Daten take the game to Styal and were much the better team, it was a case of the next goal would be crucial to the way the game swayed, and it went to Daten who cut the lead back yet again. Daten created several clear chances but squandered them and it proved costly. Styal created two good chances to wrap the game up, the first fell to Gregory who muscled his marker of the ball to break free but side footed the ball wide. The second chance fell to Smith who linked up well with McCormick he turned his marker only to put his shot wide of the best.
Styal were glad to hear the final whistle and with Poynton drawing put them in good shape.
Barnes is still looking to open his goal account and has threatened not to cut his hair till he does ! He looks more like Peter Sutcliffe every week !

STYAL A    7     V   0    OLD ALTS.

TEAM NEWS.....

Styal A fired themselves back to the top of the league in emphatic fashion with a convincing 7-0 win against Old Alts. For the first time this season, player-m anager Punk Takiar was able to name an unchanged team after last weeks 1-0 victory despite four players being available again.Paul Marchbank was injured during the warm up and was replaced at left back by Ed C.Poach continued at centre half and Matty Cook, Browny and Houghy started from the bench.

JR hit Styal 's 1st goal after 20 mins after initially being denied by the keeper in a one on one and the chance looked gone, but he showed a bit of class and determination to go chasing the ball, cut back inside and fired a fierce low drive into the far corner. It was JR again ten minutes later, this time from the spot. H / T 2-0 but in reality it should have been at least 6, with one on one chances being missed from Andy C, Scotty Hawkins and Ed C somehow missed from 3 yards.

Manager Takiar's message at half time was to stay focused , and to use the ball more cleverly and if his team scored the next goal early enough the flood gates would open. It was Andy Chalinor who had the key to the gates as he slotted home the 3rd goal but was left in a heap as he was hit with a disgraceful challenge from an Old Alts player just after the ball had already hit the back of the net. This resulted in a straight red card and now Styal faced 10 men. With the game in the bag and Styal looking extremely comfortable, chance after chance came, but somehow the away teams goal led a slightly charmed life. Paul ‘Bod' Adkin made it 4 -0, with a powerful finish, although it is unclear whether this was actually one of the 6 touches he needed to control the ball. Then Punk rang the changes with inspired substitutions. Vinny made way for Matty Cook, Bodders went off for browny and scotty hawkins was replaced by Houghy and it was 2 of these 3 subs who added Styal 's 5th 6th and 7th goals. Matty Cook scored two and went close to his hat-trick and Browny also fired in from close range.

Punk Takiar said “the boys are finally starting to play the way I want them to. We are believing in ourselves again, and enjoying our football. I still feel there is more to come from us, and it ‘will' have to come if we are to win this league, but it is well within our control. I would particularly like to comment on our keeper Joe Morrell, who didn't have a touch today, but his talking & kicking was superb. He has added confidence & stability to the whole team, and his contribution cannot be under-estimated.”

Sat 9th Feb Rylands 0 Styal 6, Styal Res 0 Poynton Res 2 (CUP), Styal 'A' 1 Sale amateurs 0
Feb 9, 2008, 10:44 pm
Styal go top of the Cheshire League with a convincing win at Rylands. This was a must win game for Styal after dropping 2 points last week at Trafford, and win Styal did! Warren Dickenson fired in a free kick from 25 yards giving the keeper no chance after only 4 minutes. The second came via a left foot strike from the same distance from Mark Tueart and the same player hit the underside of the crossbar 5 minutes later with a even better strike which cannoned back out to safety. With the impressive Mathews, Thornton and Barnes causing mayhem whenever they got the ball it was a credit to Rylands that it stayed only 2-0 until half time.
The second half saw the tempo increased. Styal were rewarded when Barnes fired home the 3rd to kill the game off on 50mins and with the home team all over the place Styal took full advantage. The ever green John Thornton pops up again to fire home the 4th in the 65min. The 5th goal came via Steven Boardman when tapping in from close range after good work by Gavin Smith on 70mins. The 6th goal was from a short corner which found its way to Darren Vernon to carry on his scoring run and 5th goal in 5 games. With the Rylands keeper also pulling off 3 outstanding saves it could have been a lot more for Styal but the clean sheet was a bonus. Full time  Rylands 0- Styal 6. Man of the match Oliver Barnes/ Brian Mathews.

Styal Reserves played poorly at home against arch rivals Poynton Reserves losing 2-0. Styal had thei chances but it was a disjointed display from a team that hold be full of confidence as they head the Cheshire Reserve League. The only blessing was that this was the cup but if they play this poorly again they can forget their title aspiratons

STYAL A    1     V    0    SALE AMATUERS

With Punk Takiar's Styal side lying fourth in the table and Sale in 3rd (2pts between them) this was the proverbial “6-pointer” and a must win for styal if they were to stay in contention for promotion. It was a game which was by no means a footballing spectacle , with both teams cancell ing each other out  early on with neither team dominating.   It was always going t o be a case of who finished their chances when they came along, which, as it goes were few and far between and this really summed up much of the first half. Marcus kenny and scotty hawkins worked hard in the centre of midfield up against 3 for much of the game and the back four were excellant throughout as was the def ending in general from all the players and this was probably the main reason why styal came out on top. Styal looked organised, with Poch coming in at centre half to play alogside Pat lyons. But the 1st half finished goal-less with neither side creating a clear cut chance of an note.

The second half was pretty much the same until the 65th minute when a great cross from the excellant Dean Rome at right back was fired in and headed home by Andy Chalinor as he outjumped both the Sale centre halfs and it turned out to be the winner. Styal certainly deserved the win, as keepr Joe Morrell didn't have a save to make and the Sale keeper made 2 or 3 good saves to deny further goals.

Overall a good, solid, organised peformance from Styal. Not pretty, but plenty of hard graft, organised team defending  and quick counter-attacking won this game effectively.

Player-manager Punk Takiar said “we are now getting back to our best. This was difficult game against strong, physical opponents, but we were better in all departments. I asked for more physical presence & I got this today. We are now joint second & 2 points of top, so it is up to us now to string some results together.”

Sat 2nd Feb Trafford Res 3 Styal 3
Feb 4, 2008, 10:55 pm

With a new manager in place and several new signings this was not going to be the Trafford that sit 3rd bottom of the table and so it proved with Styal again coming out of the blocks slowly. It came as no surprise when Trafford  scored the first goal. Barnes failed to track his runner and the resulting free header gave Styal keeper Cowell no chance with only 15 minutes gone. With Styal now upping the tempo the impressive Massey fired in to level the scores on 25 mins. Then a run by Barnes down the right resulted in John Thornton netted to keep his scoring record going and give Styal a deserved lead. With Styal now controlling the game it came as a surprise when Steve Boardman tried to control a through ball and slipped. This allowed a Trafford forward to coolly slot past Cowell in Styal's goal on 35minutes. Worse was to follow as 3 minutes later Cowell in Styals goal came for a ball he was never going to get and was left stranded on the edge of his box. The Trafford forward poked it past him to give Trafford a 3-2 advantage with 6 mins left until half time. To say the manager was upset was a bit of a understatement however, with the last kick of the half Dave Graham clipped the ball past the Trafford keeper to make the scores 3-3 at half time. With Brian Matthews coming on at half time this was message that Styal were going for Trafford's throat and with the extra attacker on it came as no surprise as Barnes was upended in the box to give Styal a penalty on 60 mins. Matthews took the penalty which was saved by the keeper. Styal pressed and Trafford made a number of goalline clearances but the home looked dangerous on the counter attack and hit the post in 75min. However with both teams unable to score again this was more a case of 2 points dropped. Now we shall see how strong the Styal squad is in the run in with several dummies well and truly spat out?
