Sat 22nd September--Styal 2 Gamesley 5; Styal 'A' 4 Sale Town Res 4
Sep 23, 2012, 11:49 am

Styal ‘A’ 4 Sale Town Res 4---Styal started slowly allowing Sale the initiative and after failing to clear the ball found themselves a goal behind in the first 10 minutes. Luckily for Styal Gareth Metcalfe was very much on his game and he turned their fortunes around by half-time. First he slotted home a penalty after a surging run by left back Darren Fluery saw the Styal left back brought down in the opposition box. Then he fired home after the ball broke from a corner. And, thirdly the best of the 3 came when Conor Moore picked out his run and Gareth bent the ball around the oncoming keeper.

The defensive shortcomings cost Styal on the stroke of half time as their long throw in routine saw Sale’s centre back get a clean header on goal. Half time 3-2

Conor Moore put Styal 4-2 ahead after robbing a Sale defender and firing home off the post. Sale wouldn’t lie down and continued the aerial approach with their long throw in routine. Styal didn’t come to terms with it and Sale scored 2 further goals to level the game up. It could have gone either way at the end with both sides having good chances to take all the points.

Sat 8th Sept Styal 2 Billing 3; Denton Town Res 0 Styal Res 7; Styal 'A' 1 Deans 1
Sep 9, 2012, 5:35 pm

Styal ‘A’ 1 Deans 1

Overall a point each was a fair result and both teams tried to play football. The heat was exceptional and there were a number of weary legs in the second half. Styal looked comfortable for the most part but every so often Dean would put together a sharp attack that caught them wanting. It was lucky that Tom Perry was in fantastic form as he pulled off 3 outstanding first half saves, the last one when he dived to his left side to parry away a point black bullet of a shot being exceptional. At the other end Styal managed to put the ball into Deans net 3 times but only 1 counted; a classy effort from Gareth Metcalfe who went past a couple of Deans defenders and shot from the edge of the box left footed giving the keeper no chance. The feeling was that if Styal could add a second goal to the 1-0 half time lead Deans would fade in the afternoon sun.

Although Styal started well in the second half and looked to be heading towards a victory, unfortunately, Deans broke quickly from a set piece opportunity Styal had around the Deans box 20 minutes into the half and their pace and movement caught Styal napping. The shot which finished the move gave Perry no chance and was a classic counter attack. The last 25 minutes were closely fought with Deans winning the midfield battle but Styal frequently breaking down the right and putting some quality balls into the Deans box. Great games for Conor Moore upfront, Gareth Metcalfe, Adam Ireland and Matt Cook who folled in at centre half. And an outstanding performance between the sticks by Tom Perry who not only stopped the shots but commanded everything in the penalty box.

1st September Pilkingtons 0 Styal 2; Styal Res 5 Daten Res 1; Styal 'A' 0 Northenden Vics 4
Sep 1, 2012, 5:54 pm

Good wins for the 1st team (league) and the reserves (cup)

Styal ‘A’ failed to capitalise on last week’s win going down 4-0 at home to Northenden. A solitary Northenden strike separated the sides at half time despite Styal having most of the play and territory. The second half was a pretty even affair but Styal paid the price for mistakes as Northenden finished clinically. Styal created a hatful of chance in the second half but had no one with the killer instinct when numerous chances came within a couple of yards of the Northenden goal line.

25th Aug Middlewich Town 1 Styal 2; AFC Jolly Butcher 0 Styal 'A' 2
Aug 25, 2012, 6:31 pm

A good win for the 1st team away at Middlewich.

Meanwhile the 'A' team opened their campaign with a good win against a team that had had the benefit of pre season games. Lee Taylor kept the back 4 consisting of last years stars working as a unit whilst the midfield engine room of Matt Cook and Callum Garner worked well. The Jolly Butcher managed to butcher numerous chances during the first half and carried the main threat. Tom Perry made one fantastic save tipping the bar onto the Styal bar to keep them in the game. However Styal looked as if they could create something with Adam Holdworth chasing everything down upfront and Conor Glass always looking for the ball and providing options. The second half saw a similar pattern develop but Joe Swindells started finding more space upfront and Darren Fluery's introduction at full back gave Styal some added pace. It was Tom Marsden that stepped forward for Styal to make his presence felt. Outside the box he transferred the ball onto his left foot and fired a screamer into to top left hand corner of the Butcher goal. With Styal 1-0 up the Butchers attacked and Styal weathered the storm as Butcher again spurned chances. With Butcher chasing the game Styal wrapped things up when Conor Glass got onto the end of a through ball and fired low past the butcher keeper, leaving the Butcher's the less Jolly team at the final whistle.
